Routine inspections are the foundation of lead-acid battery maintenance. Perform the following checks regularly:
- Visual Inspection
Look for any indications of leakage, corrosion, or deterioration in the battery. Look for cracks in the casing, loose or corroded terminals, and electrolyte levels. Address any anomalies as soon as you find them.
- Terminal Cleaning
Corrosion on battery terminals can hinder performance. Use a professional battery terminal cleaner or a solution of baking soda and water to clean the terminals. Scrub away corrosion with a wire brush or a terminal cleaning tool to ensure excellent electrical contact.
- Electrolyte Levels
Make sure the electrolyte levels are correct for batteries with detachable caps. Verify that the plates are completely immersed. Add distilled water as needed to maintain the ideal level, which is normally 1/2 to 1 inch above the plates. Be cautious not to overfill.
- Cable Tightness
Check the tightness of battery cable connections. Loose connections can result in voltage drop and reduced performance. In order to achieve a snug fit without overtightening, tighten any loose connections.
